Caught
a
Bronze baby
With
Bronze eyes
In 
Bronzeville

Left.
Alone.
because Life and 
Love
are complicated
things.

And not every woman dreams of becoming a mother.

On March 14th 1878
Michael Reese
Wealthy and addled by
western American greed
Surrounded by family and friends in Bavaria
Drew up his will.

To his sister in Chicago
Large sums of money
to hopefully undo his eternal sinning.
(Greed and selfishness are the root of all evil, 
after all.

So, instead,
let there be a hospital.
Where everyone regardless of 
ethnicity, income, or creed
may be treated

Maybe that set him right with God.
We’ll never know.

Within months he died 
Unexpectedly.
Never made it back to the 
Wild
Golden
Untamed
West

Timing flawless.

Summer  
2006
That Bronze Baby
all growed up and womaned
about to grow 
a baby herself
sits nervously
on the side of a road
in Bavaria

Nothing Valuable to will away.
Thoughts most
Uncharitable
Far from tame
But,
a good amount of weed
Hidden, stuffed, between tampons 
in a car trunk
undetected by border control
While stopped for a phony 50 US Dollar Bill
which bore 50 Cent’s face 
encircled by the words:

Get Rich or Die Trying.

Don’t we all?

Michael Reese Hospital
had 
Gropius designed buildings
And era defying
innovation. 

Not even that saved it.
Ultimately it was forgotten.
As was he.

The hospital was abandoned.
It was left to rot.

It still rots today.

It took that 
Bronze baby
41 years to understand
Why 
She wasn’t rotting, too.

It took 42 years for her
To begin to set her own story right
With God.
